The region of Chania, on the western side of the island, is dominated by the impressive White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and its famous National Park that occupies the largest part of the area. The city of Chania remains unaltered of all its characteristics. The Old Town’s maze-like alleys with the beautiful Venetian mansions, fountains and the elaborate churches and historical monuments dating back the Venetian Rule Era. If you love monasteries you have to visit the monastery of Chrysoskalítissa. It is a 17th century Orthodox Christian monastery that lies on a steep cliff on the south west coast of Crete, approximately 72 kilometers from the town of Chania. Built on 35 meters high rocks that overlook the Libyan Sea. According to local tradition, the name of the monastery is derived from one of the 90 steps that lead there, which is said to be golden and visible only to devout Christians. Take a trip in your rental car and immerse yourself in its charm and tranquility!

In addition to historical sights, the town of Chania has a few of the most incredible beaches on the island with crystal clear water and some of them even have pink sand like “Elafonisi”, “Balos” “Seitan Limani” “ChoraSfakion” and “Falasarna”.

Rethymno region: Crete’s smallest prefecture located between the White Mountains and Mt Psiloritis (also called “Idi”), is synonymous to gorgeous mountain capes, marvelous beaches, traditional Cretan music, legendary caves, historic monasteries and monuments and traditional villages. When you are driving in the city make sure you will not miss Fort “Fortezza” which is located in the north side of the city, dating back to the 16th Century, now a Venetian Era Citadel and one of the most well-preserved sights in Crete. It is located right next to the sea, so you can combine a cultural trip with a touch of beach time while you are at it! Another historical monument, “The Loggia”, also built in the 16th Century, is one of the most imposing buildings in the city, originally used by Venetian Aristocrats for important Political meetings. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the Greek-Turkish War, The Loggia became a mosque and continued to be used for prayer. Today, it is a fascinating museum housing archeological treasures that have been discovered all around Crete. If however, you are feeling more adventurous, you can visit the beautiful highlands of Crete with your rental – perfect for hiking and exploring, the village of Anogia is situated at an altitude of 1,4000m and is the home to several grazing sheep and goats. From there you can travel further up into the mountains to witness the “Ida Cave”, which was closed to visitors until 2012 to protect its historical treasures including gold and silver jewelry, spearheads and seals dating back from Minoan to Roman times! It is well worth a trip! Finally, Rethymno has a few of the most amazing beaches in Crete, all accessible with your rental car! The beach of “Preveli”, “Triopetra”, “Plakias”, “Bali” and “Panormo” are the beaches you should be visiting first! Whether you like your beach crowded or secluded, you can enjoy the sun with a cold beer or stay under you umbrella and read a book to relax!
